Yep, that was the best Nirvana pun I could come up with!

But it pretty much sums up today’s email.

Let me start by saying I’m a huge Nirvana fan.

Was even a bit Kurt Cobain obsessed as an angst ridden teenager, but that’s another story.

Musically Nirvana were brilliant but Kurt Cobain added much more than just music.

He was this struggling, tortured artist that had fame thrust upon him.

He wasn’t interested in money or selling out just his creative integrity.

He embodied angst and pain in his music for his generation and generations to come.

And he had cool hair!

All of all this created the cult of Kurt Cobain and turned him into an icon that sold millions of records.

But here’s the problem…

Most of it is bullshit! (apart from the hair, it was pretty cool!)

Kurt Cobain always wanted to be successful and had been planning how to get there for years.

He made calculated moves to get where he wanted to be.

And just like the rest of us, he wanted to be rich and have the security and freedom money brings.

He even changed the band’s recording contract after they made it to give himself a bigger share of the money.

Now, I don’t think there is anything wrong with what Kurt Cobain did, so why not admit it?

Because it’s not cool!

Rockstars who constantly talk about their business ambitions and love of money sound like dicks!

Just look at Gene Simmons (sorry Kiss fans)

It’s not the Rock n Roll fairy tale that we want.

We want our rockstars to struggle on the way up.

We want the sex and drugs scandals when they have made it.

And then we want the inevitable crash and burn into the 27 club.

It sounds crazy and a bit fucked up… but it’s a truth.

It all adds to the allure of these musicians and guilds them up as legends.

Kurt Cobain knew it, which is why he controlled the image and persona as much his music.

So what should you take from the Kurt Cobain story…

Definitely not the smack habit and crazy wife!

But there is some marketing gold here.

Projecting the right image and message to the right audience will make you irresistible to them!

This is turns you from a generic, boring guitar teacher to the perfect guitar teacher for your perfect student.

And they will pay more to be taught by you!

If you’re interested in being an exciting, interesting guitar teacher that attracts cool and fun students let have a chat!

Over and out.

Jack

PS – Want to know why I try more to repel people than attract people when I’m marketing guitar lessons?

I’ll show you the power of being repellent tomorrow.
