I love this lyric.
I love the Beatles in general.
But this lyric especially.
The first time I really listened to it, it just really connected with me.
And it’s not the hippy sentimentality.
It’s the practicality.
To me this is saying…
You only get out of life what you are willing to put in.
And it applies to everything
Your happiness, love life, friends, education, health, business etc.
You are directly responsible for what happens to you.
We all know this but how many people really live like this.
I didn’t.
For years I was very passive and waited for things to happen for me.
And most of the time they didn’t.
As you can probably guess this was the part of my life when I had a failing business.
Let me give you an example of how this attitude was holding me back.
About six years ago I kept having the same situation happen again and again.
I would meet someone at a party or through work, family etc. who wanted guitar lessons and they’d be desperate to get my contact details and come for a lesson.
I’d hand over my business card and think that’s it. Got me a new student.
And then I’d never hear from them again.
Why? Was it me? Had I put them off? Had they all of a sudden changed their mind about playing guitar?
No, here’s what had happened.
Life happened.
They’d forget, be too busy to get round to ringing or lose my card.
Or any other mundane reason that stops you doing things.
So I tried something new.
Instead of giving them my card, I collected their contact details.
I even created special cards for them to fill in rather than having business cards.
Now I was in control.
I could ring them or send an email and book them in for a lesson.
I couldn’t believe how well it work.
And then I had a realisation.
The reason my marketing was failing and most guitar teachers marketing fails.
It was too PASSIVE!
I would stick up a website, post on facebook, put an ad on gumtree
And wait.
And hope.
That someone would ring.
Sometimes they would and sometimes they wouldn’t.
It wasn’t enough, it just wasn’t working.
What I needed was all my marketing to be more assertive.
My marketing needed to go out and collect people’s contact details.
And then I could go ring them and book them in for a lesson.
That’s what I did.
I learnt how to get in front of my target audience, collect their info and then ring them up and book them.
No more waiting around for other people.
I was directly responsible for how many students I had, and how much money I earned.
Trust me, that’s a pretty cool feeling!
