I was inspired to write this email after I got the comment below about an article I had written.
“Profanity in your marketing is a HUGE red flag. Very unprofessional”
Someones very easily offended eh!
So back to my original question should you swear in front of your students or in your marketing?
Abso-fucking-lutely!
IF, AND ONLY IF…
You want to work with people that aren’t offended by swearing, or even like it.
Let me go a bit deeper.
In my guitar teaching niche I work with kids aged 5 to 12 and my marketing is aimed at mums in their mid 30s.
So do I swear when I market to them?
Of course not.
That’s not the image I want to project or what they want from a guitar teacher.
When I advertise my lessons I have to get into the mindset of a mum in her mid 30s and try and appeal to her.
Now this is very effective and gets results.
And as much as I love teaching kids marketing to their mums is not always the most fun for me.
Because a mum in her mid 30s I am not!
I am a man in my late 20s
When I started this business I wanted a change.
I wanted to work with people in similar position to me
Who have the same interests, goals, likes, dislikes, fears etc.
I want to talk to you in the exact same way I would if I knew you personally.
And when I talk to people I know I swear occasionally.
I don’t do it for effect, it’s how I talk. (except for the one at the top of this email, that one was!)
When I do this or cover a topic that might be considered controversial two things happens…
1. People unsubscribe from newsletter.
2. A load more people open the email 4 or 5 times.
I turn some people off who would probably never invest in me anyway.
Like my friend with the constructive feedback!
But I connect with a lot more people, and these are the people I want to work with.
You don’t need to please everyone, just your audience, your people!
Don’t worry about being “professional”
What does that even mean?
It’s your business, you’re the boss, your rules!
Here’s what you should worry about.
Worry about being boring!
Worry about being vanilla!
Whether you are being fun and sparkly or foul mouthed and dirty.
Your audience will appreciate it.
You’ll piss some people off.
But some people will love it, and they could be your next student
